Hair Accessories Every Natural Girl Should Have

@loaferette

As a newly converted naturalista who is now sporting a fresh set of instant locs with extensions, I recognize the versatility of natural hair. Anyone with afro-textured, kinky, curly, nappy hair knows that all days aren’t good hair days. Sometimes, adding a little something extra to your hair can make a huge difference in how you view yourself.

With the expansion of the natural hair community in the past 5-10 years, the variety of hair accessories has expanded with it, giving black and mixed women options that we never had before. Today, I am giving you a few must-have natural hair accessories that every natural girl should have! The styling possibilities are endless; all it requires is some imagination and a few hair accessories. Whatever the occasion, they will elevate your look.

Head wrap

Let’s be honest; every day will not be a good hair day, which is fine. Say you missed your wash day or have to make a quick run to the store. A Headwrap may be your saving grace and your keeping power. A headwrap is a sure way to look fly with as little effort as possible. They often come in a variety of fabrics and prints. These can always be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

Bedazzled Hairpins

Bedazzled, bejeweled, whatever term you would like to use, these hairpins have been making waves for quite some time. They were one of the top accessory trends in 2020. Yet it’s still very much in style today; they range from classy and empowering to straight-up hood (if that’s the look you’re going for). With these, you can express yourself in whatever way you see fit. They indeed speak for themselves with trendy customized options like yaas, queen, and boss. You can find these bedazzled hairpins at most local beauty supply stores, Amazon, or Etsy.

Headbands

Before the advent of headband wigs and the like, I grew up wearing a good ole bando, as it is affectionately called in Antigua and Barbuda. I remember on Sunday mornings while getting ready for church, my grandmother would oil up my hair, brush it out, slap a big ugly headband, and send my siblings and me off. Headbands don’t hold practically fond memories for me, but now I have options. Since locking my hair, I have had more bad hair days than I can count. You know that phase when your roots need to retwist, or you need a style, a barber, or something. My elastic/ silk headbands have saved me from making rash decisions I knew I would regret. So cheers to the headband.

Hair Combs

Hair combs aren’t new to the scene; they are some of the oldest hair accessories and have been around since 5500 BC. Societies like the ancient Greeks and Egyptians all adorned themselves with these trinkets. Over the years, they have become more delicate, fancy, and mainstream. Hair combs are elegant and classy and can dress up your hair for special occasions. Most hair combs are designed with jewels, pearls, and other sparkly accents. More and more brides adorn their hair with hair combs,

Hair Beads

Beads are an excellent way to add some style to your natural hair. They come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. These beads can be stacked, or worn at the ends or middle of your hair. This accessory can also be worn by all ages. I remember when I was a child, my parents would reward us for doing well in school but adding beads to our hair for the summer.

when all else fails, just put on a hat.
